Der Stromverbrauch der Malediven wächst stetig. Insbesondere in der Hauptstadt Malé müssen Jahr für Jahr etwa 3 MW mehr an Leistung zur Verfügung gestellt werden, um dem Energiebedarf der Bevölkerung gerecht zu werden. Da es auf den Malediven kein zentrales Kraftwerk gibt, wird die Energie dezentral über Dieselgeneratoren bereitgestellt. Der staatliche Energieversorger (STELCO) hat deshalb vier neue 1 MW-Generatoren für Malé ausgeschrieben, die möglichst bald geliefert und in Betrieb genommen werden sollen.
Die 120.000-Einwohner-Stadt Male verbraucht zu Stoßzeiten über 29.000 KW. Die zur Zeit installierte Maximalleistung beträgt ohne die neuen Generatoren 35.490 KW bei einem Verbrauch von rund 115.000 Litern Diesel täglich.
