Laut den Minivannews findet der nächste SAARC-Gipfel doch nicht wie geplant in Male auf den Malediven statt, sondern auf Sri Lanka. Die Malediven dürfen dafür im Jahr 2009 Gastgeber des Meetings sein. Die maledivische Regierung hatte den Gipfel schon als wichtiges Ereignis für den Inselstaat angekündigt.
Die SAARC (Südasiatische Vereinigung für regionale Zusammenarbeit) ist die im Jahr 1985 südasiatische Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft. Mitgliederstatten sind Bangladesch, Bhutan, Indien, Malediven, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka und Afghanistan.
