Das Dengue Fieber, eine von Stechmücken übertragene Infektionskrankheit, ist auf den Malediven auf dem Vormarsch. Dies gab ein Verantwortlicher des Gesundheitsamtes der Malediven am Mittwoch bekannt. Seit Anfang dieses Jahres seien schon 97 Menschen positiv auf den Virus getestet worden, allerdings nur 8 davon positiv auf das hämorrhagische Dengue-Fieber, eine schwerere Variante, die auch tödliche Folgen haben kann.
Zur Zeit wird gerade der Todesfall eines Kindes in Male untersucht, dessen mögliche Ursache das Dengue Fieber sein könnte. Insbesondere Kinder und Jugendliche sind von dem Virus am häufigsten betroffen.
Das Gesundheitsamt rät, die Brutplätze der Moskitos zu bekämpfen, um die Übertragung der Krankheit einzudämmen. Eine Impfung gegen Dengue Fieber ist zur Zeit noch nicht möglich. In Thailand und Singapur wird aber bereits an einem Impfstoff geforscht.
